NOMIS Labour Market Profiles
NOMIS is a web-based database of Official UK Labour Market Statistics run by the University of Durham on behalf of the ONS. First launched in 1986, NOMIS houses an extensive range of government statistical information on the UK labour market including Employment, Unemployment, Earnings, Labour Force Survey and Jobcentre Plus vacancies.
NOMIS provides labour market profiles providing an overview of the key labour market information available at a range of geographic levels. The statistics are presented according to a framework of labour supply and demand known as the labour market accounting system:
- The supply side is represented by those people who supply (or potentially supply) their labour to employers, through employment, unemployment and inactivity.
- Demand is represented by the jobs offered by employers and job vacancies
Profiles are available for Local authorities (Counties and Districts), Wards and Parliamentary Constituencies. The profiles for Hertfordshire and the ten Districts are available by selecting the links to the NOMIS website on the right hand side of the screen. The profiles for Wards in Hertfordshire are available by selecting the link entitled NOMIS Ward Labour Market Profiles (on the left hand side of the screen).
The profiles use the most appropriate sources of statistics available at the different geographic levels. The data are taken directly from the main Nomis database so reports will always give you the most recently published figures. The definitions and explanations section to the end of each profile explains the sources used and defines the variables included in the tables.
Local authority profiles bring together data from a range of official sources including population estimates, Annual Population Survey, Jobseekers Allowance claimants, Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings and VAT registrations. Limited non-confidential Annual Business Inquiry data is also available without the need for a Chancellor of Exchequer's Notice.
Ward profiles mainly use data from the 2001 Census of Population so are available for 2003 Census Area Statistics (CAS) Wards. They complement the summary statistics report available on the Neighbourhood Statistics by providing labour market measures not available in that report and by giving figures for working age population (rather than all people aged 16-74).
For more information or to access the profiles for the rest of England, Wales or Scotland visit the NOMIS website by selecting the link entitled NOMIS (on the right hand side of the screen).
