This section contains information on rural planning.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have published a rural definition and classification which are available by selecting the link entitled Rural Definition and Local Authority Classification (on the right hand side of the screen).
The Rural Definition was introduced in 2004 as a joint project between the Commission for Rural Communities (CRC - formerly the Countryside Agency), the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) and the Welsh Assembly. It was delivered by the Rural Evidence Research Centre at Birkbeck College (RERC).
DEFRA have produced maps of the Rural/Urban definition and these are available for the East of England area by selecting the link entitled Rural Atlas for the East of England (on the right hand side of the screen). Maps are also available for the other Government regions.
