Benefits for disabled people and carers

The Disability and Carers Service, which is part of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), is responsible for benefits and services for people who are sick or have a disability, for example, Disability Living Allowance, Incapacity Benefit (or Severe Disablement Allowance) and Attendance Allowance.

The DWP provides counts of Disability Living Allowance claimants. It shows breakdowns by their age, gender, duration of claim and the rate of the care/mobility award they receive. Each file covers the whole of Great Britain but is broken down to Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) or Ward level (2003 Statistical Wards). Data snapshots are provided every February, May, August and November. This data is available from the DWP website by selecting the link entitled Disability Living Allowance data (on the right hand side of the screen).

The DWP also provides counts of Incapacity Benefit/Severe Disablement Allowance claimants. It shows breakdowns by their benefit type, age, gender, duration of claim and their main disabling condition. Each file covers the whole of Great Britain but is broken down to Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) or Ward level (2003 Statistical Wards). Data snapshots are provided every February, May, August and November. This data is available from the DWP website by selecting the link entitled Incapacity Benefit/Severe Disablement Allowance data (on the right hand side of the screen).
