Local firefighters warn young people about playing with fire
Green Watch at Stevenage Fire Station went along to the event at the Gordon Craig Theatre, hosted by Rock Challenge UK.
Firefighters gave a talk and showed hard-hitting videos of firefighting situations which have been caused by young people playing with fire.
The videos addressed the consequences of arson, hoax 999 calls, and wasting fire service resources at small incidents, which could then prevent the emergency service attending serious or life threatening situations.
The videos showed firefighters talking about their own experiences, describing a house fire caused by two children playing with matches, and a fire set by children in a field, which coincided with a serious house fire, using up much needed resources. The videos highlight the very real and devastating consequences of playing with fire.
Richard Smith, Executive Member for Community Safety, said: “We want to make sure local young people understand the seriousness of our messages. We hope to encourage them to think about the consequences before they act, and to never play with fire."
