Deprivation is a major social issue, even in a prosperous area such as Hertfordshire there are pockets of deprivation.
The Index of Multiple Deprivation combines a number of indicators (or indices), chosen to cover a range of economic, social and housing issues, into a single deprivation score for each small area in England. The Index and individual indices are used widely to analyse patterns of deprivation, identify areas that would benefit from special initiatives or programmes and as a tool to determine eligibility for specific funding streams. Further information on the Indices of Deprivation is available below.
After the publication of the 2004 Indices of Deprivation, Hertfordshire Prosperity commissioned consultants Oxford Consultants for Social Inclusion (OCSI) to map deprivation in Hertfordshire, as part of the Herts Investing in Communities programme. This work was completed in March 2005 and the results are presented below.
