Indices of Deprivation
The Indices of Deprivation 2010 were published on 24th March 2011.
Indices of Deprivation are measures of deprivation for areas in England. They are derived from a number of deprivation-related indicators. The indices are published by Communities and Local Government (CLG). More information is available on the CLG website by selecting the link entitled Information on the Indices of Deprivation (on the right hand side of the screen).
The Index of Deprivation 2000 was a measure of deprivation for every ward and local authority area in England. It combined a number of indicators which covered a range of domains (income, employment, health deprivation and disability, education skills and training, housing and geographical access to services) into a single deprivation score for each area.
The Index of Multiple Deprivation 2004 (IMD 2004) was a Super Output Area (SOA) level measure of multiple deprivation and is made up of seven SOA level Domain Indices. There are also two supplementary Indices (Income Deprivation Affecting Children and Income Deprivation Affecting Older People). Summary measures of the IMD 2004 are presented at district and county level. The SOA level Domain Indices and IMD 2004, together with the district and county level summaries are referred to as the Indices of Deprivation 2004 (ID 2004).
The Index of Multiple Deprivation 2007 (IMD 2007) was published on 7th December 2007. It was also a Super Output Area level measure and again was made up of seven SOA level domains. The two supplementary Indices (Income Deprivation Affecting Children and Income Deprivation Affecting Older People) were also created. Summary measures of the IMD 2007 were again presented at district and county level.
The new Index of Multiple Deprivation 2010 (IMD 2010) was published on 24th March 2011. It is also a Super Output Area level measure and again is made up of the seven SOA level domains. The two supplementary Indices (Income Deprivation Affecting Children and Income Deprivation Affecting Older People) have also been created. Summary measures of the IMD 2010 are again presented at district and county level.
The methodology underpinning the ID 2004, ID 2007 and the ID 2010 are largely the same though there have been small changes to some of the underlying indicators. Comparison between the three Indices is therefore acceptable.
