National Statistics 2001 Area Classification

The 2001 Area Classification uses data from the 2001 Census to group geographic areas into groups of similarity based on their census attributes. It is available for Local Authorities, Health Areas, Wards, Census Output Areas and Super Output Areas.

The National Statistics website holds Area Classification data and maps (using SVG) showing the Area Classification for the areas above. These are available by selecting the link entitled 2001 Area Classification data and maps (at the bottom of the screen).

A User Group has also been set up to promote the use the the Area Classification. Visit the website by selecting the link entitled Output Area Classification User Group website (on the right hand side of the screen). The website includes an interactive map of the Output Area Classification.
