Population estimates
The main source of detailed population data is the national census, but this is only carried out once every ten years and only provides a snapshot of the situation at that time. It is however the most accurate data available for a wide range of population related subjects.Estimates of population are produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) each year in between Censuses. These "mid year" estimates are initially based on the previous census figures and are calculated using numbers of birth and deaths in an area and estimates of migration within the UK and to and from the UK. Estimates are produced at local authority level and larger geographies and are broken down by gender and 5 year age group. Data for Hertfordshire and it's ten district council areas are available by selecting the link entitled Registrar General's mid year population estimates for Hertfordshire (on the right hand side of the screen).
